If you’ve been teaching group fitness classes for a while, you may have noticed that participation ebbs and flows. There will be those who attend religiously and those who only attend occasionally. Learn how to increase class participation with some simple tips.
First, make sure you understand reasons someone may not take part regularly. Many times it is personal reason or it may be as simple as the type of class. For example, they may not feel like they’re fit enough, be self-conscious about their abilities, or simply not be interested in the type of class you’re offering.
Whatever the reason, there are a few things you can do to increase participation in your classes.
Tips To Increase Class Participation
1. Offer A Variety Of Classes
If you only provide one type of class, you are likely to only attract people interested in that one type of exercise. But if you provide a variety of exercise types, then you’ll be more likely to appeal to a broader range of people. Research has shown that it’s important to get all four types of exercise: endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Each one has different benefits. Doing one kind also can improve your ability to do the others, and variety helps reduce boredom and risk of injury.
2. Make Classes Accessible To Everyone.
If you’re only teaching high intensity classes or requiring a lot of complex movements, you’re likely to turn people off. But if you offer classes suitable for all fitness levels and age groups, you’ll likely get more people to participate regularly.
3. Encourage People To Bring A Friend To Class
Sometimes, all it takes is a little encouragement from someone we know and trust to get us to try something new. Encourage friends or family members to come to your class and ask them to bring another friend with them.
4. Make Sure Your Classes Are Fun
If people come to your classes and are not having fun, they likely will not return. So make sure you’re always mixing things up and keeping your classes exciting and satisfying.
5. Offer Incentives To Participate
If you really want to increase participation in your classes, offer incentives for people to come to class and take part. For example, you could offer future classes at a discount, offer packages with a price break, or give out swag or promotional brand items to people who attend a certain number of classes.
Group fitness classes are a great way to get in shape and have fun while doing it, but keeping people coming back is no easy task. These five tips will help you create an environment where people feel comfortable getting up and moving and keep them coming back for more.
